Moving to western New York from California has been like a homecoming to me. I love the High Sierra, and I love the Mojave Desert, but these places have always felt exotic. We moved to our new home just ahead of a late February snow storm a few years ago, and we were racing early to keep in front of the snow. It was dawn as we drove across the state line, and I could see reeds along the banks of a creek off the side of the road. I felt a profound sense of belonging. I am filled with radical, overwhelming wonder whenever I am a part of the wild. I’m filled with that and a deep sense of belonging in these woods. There’s no way to explain that emotion exactly. I hope to do so inexactly in this collection.
This was a collection that I wrote during the pandemic. After I had written these poems, the artist, Jane Edberg, made paintings in response to the poems. She wasn’t illustrating my work, but instead commented on them through new imagery. I’m a huge fan of her work, and we continue to collaborate on new work.

Kitkitdizzi is a non-linear memoir because all of our time in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks tends to get tangled up in our memories. There were so many moment of walking and self-discovery that the whole time feels a bit like a dream sometimes. It's also one of the most important things we've ever done in terms of learning about ourselves and the world.
I wrote this almost unconsciously. When I was just kind of doodling in my writing notebooks, I found myself writing about Cyndi and her father and each time they were living the moment between moments, trying to find the significance of the everyday. It was until three years in that I realized I’d been constructing their lives in my own moments between writing projects.

So often, I wander in a sort of self-important daze not aware of the fact that the people around me are living their own lives of passion and importance. I live in the Inland Empire, and I wanted to write about others living near and around me whose lives have a kind of Biblical significance to themselves.
In the summers, Annie and I live in a van in the High Sierra where we teach free classes and wander and draw and write. Living off grid for a while grounds me and reminds me of what actually matters in this world. This poetry comes from the intensity of living free from the constant barking daily life.

Working with Grant Hier was a gift. We wrote this for years, talking about what history is and how almost all of it exists on the peripheries of the history books. We wanted to capture real passions and moments of the people living these lives.

Ken Johnson and I worked on this together. I work in collaboration in an attempt to get away from my own ego. Ken’s a wonderful person to help me with this quest. He lives a life of exceptional sincerity and thought. I loved talking through these poems with him and I am in awe of his art.
